Haverfordwest County kicked off their Uefa Cup campaign at Ninian Park on Thursday evening against Icelanders Hafnarfjördur. Unfortunately for the Welsh Premier outfit, also nicknamed the Bluebirds, they were beaten 1-0 by the Icelanders Hafnarfjördur.

The Bluebirds playing Uefa Cup football at Ninian Park could be a regularity if Sam Hammam manages to twist the arm of the Welsh Football Association, but it was a different Bluebirds who kicked off their European campaign at Cardiff City's ground on Thursday evening.

Haverfordwest County, who share a nickname with City, played their Uefa Cup preliminary round game against Icelanders Hafnarfjördur at Ninian Park but sadly they are set to join a long list of Welsh casualties in Europe. Former City 'keeper Lee Kendall made a string of excellent saves, but could do nothing about Allan Borgvardt's strike sixteen minutes from time.

The hosts had plenty of chances which will give them a glimmer of hope of causing an upset in Iceland, but they will start largely as underdogs and the likelihood is that no Welsh club will progress in Europe, with Total Network Solutions losing 2-0 Oster also in the Uefa Cup, and Rhyl taking a 4-0 beating against Skonto Riga in the Champions League qualifier in Latvia.
