Former Tranmere Rovers and Bristol City striker John Kerr has been appointed as new Under-18 side boss and Academy assistant manager. The arrival of the 44-year-old to Ninian Park follows the departure of Colin Pascoe.

Cardiff City have announced the appointment of John Kerr as boss of the Under-18 side and Academy assistant manager. Te 44-year-old fought off competition from 80 other applicants, but his wealth of experience his thought to have helped the club make their decision.

Former Football League striker Kerr enjoyed spells at several clubs during his playing career, most notably with Tranmere Rovers and rivals Bristol City. He also enjoyed spells abroad in Belgium and France, so is likely to bring a blend of training methods to the new academy. Kerr replaced Colin Pascoe who left the club at the end of last season. Former Sunderland player Pascoe had done a good job at Ninian Park with the young players, but the ex-Jack has moved on as the club achieved Academy status.

Kerr has been working in a coaching capacity in British football for 15 years now, after his career was suddenly ended following a horrific ligament injury whilst playing for Bangor City. He has worked in youth-team roles at Chester City, Shrewsbury Town and Walsall and seems a fair acquisition by the club.

"This is an ideal time to join Cardiff because we've just achieved Academy status," said Kerr.

"I'm delighted to be part of it and the task is to do everything possible to produce young players with the ability to play at the top level.

"The pressure is on, but I know Cardiff have a number of players with genuine ability and I'm looking forward to working with them."
