Cardiff City centre-half James Collins is hoping he can establish himself a regular place in Mark Hughes' Welsh squad. The uncapped defender has just been named in an experimental international squad for friendly internationals against Norway and Canada.

Cardiff City defender James Collins is looking to build on his inclusion in the Welsh squad for two forthcoming friendlies by establishing himself in Mark Hughes' international squad.

The uncapped youngster has represented Wales at every level except the seniors, but will be hoping to make an appearance for the Welsh in at least one of the international friendlies against Norway and Canada at the end of the month.

Collins was one of six Cardiff City players in the squad, with Robert Earnshaw, Daniel Gabbidon, Paul Parry, Martyn Margetson and Rhys Weston also named in the squad. This is an excellent achievement, albeit with several Welsh regulars missing from Sparky's squad. Collins will now look to cement his place in Mark Hughes' squad for the World Cup qualification matches, which include 'Battles of Britain' against England and Northern Ireland, starting in September.

"With the start of the World Cup qualifiers just around the corner, this is the perfect time for me to make an impression," said Collins.

"My target is obviously to make the World Cup qualification squad and that would not only be good for me, but also for Cardiff."

The 20-year-old has had an excellent season, and after a reluctance from Lennie Lawrence to play the versatile defender, he seized his opportunity as the campaign drew to an end and now looks set to partner Daniel Gabbidon at the heart of the Bluebirds defence next term.
