The Football League have agreed a deal with Coca-Cola, which will see the soft drink giants take over sponsorship of the league from the start of next season.

Nationwide took over sponsorship of Division One, Two and Three eight years ago from Endsleigh and have had tremendous success with the deal, but the league will now be officially known as the Coca-Cola Football League starting when the new season begins in August. The sponsorship of the Premiership will remain with Barclaycard, with the top flight no longer affiliated with the lower divisions on such matters.

"This new agreement is good news, it provides a tremendous boost for league clubs and, on their behalf, it is a great pleasure to welcome Coca-Cola to this partnership," said Football League chairman Sir Brian Mawhinney.

"I am grateful for their support. For our part we will ensure that we continue to deliver a quality product.

"Attracting a brand of the stature of Coca-Cola is clearly a coup for the league and demonstrates the enduring appeal of our competition."

Cardiff City and the other 71 clubs across the divisions will be given a share in the money that Coca-Cola have paid for the sponsorship of the three divisions.
