Cardiff City failed to break down a very solid Wigan Athletic defence, as the two newly-promoted sides drew 0-0 at Ninian Park. Peter Thorne and Richard Langley had the best chances for the Bluebirds, but neither side ever looked like scoring, and the draw was the fair result.

| The Bluebirds failed to break down a
solid Wigan Athletic defence, as the points were shared in Tuesday nights
0-0 draw at Ninian Park. High-flying Wigan could have gone top with victory
over City, and their superb defence has played a massive part towards their
surprise start to the season.
The City attack had no way through with Robert Earnshaw, who has already bagged 14 goals this season, being kept very quiet by a formidable defensive partnership of De Vos and Jackson at the centre of defence for the Latics. City's chances were few and far between. Richard Langley went close early on with a powerful drive wide of John Filan's post, and Peter Thorne had a couple of efforts at goal but City rarely looked like gaining their fourth home victory of the season. Wigan posed little threat to Neil Alexander in the City's goal, but their new £1million striker Geoff Horsfield should have given the visitors all three points with the best chance of the match. The former Birmingham City attacker, who was linked with a move to Ninian Park, was left one-on-one with the Scottish 'keeper, but he blasted his shot over the bar to deny the small, but loyal travelling support something to really cheer about. Peter Thorne, who has been booked after clattering Eaden to the floor, had the last chance of the match with a header that clipped the top of the bar, but it finished a goalless draw which was the fair result, and a scoreline that both Lennie Lawrence and Paul Jewell will be relatively pleased with.
