Newcastle United came out and turned on the style against a strong Chelsea side this afternoon. Alan Pardew’s side went into the game at St James Park on the back of a media storm and two consecutive defeats in the Premier League and Capital One Cup with hope,  but with few pundits predicting anything but a defeat for the home side.

Instead Newcastle showed resilience after John Terry hit the crossbar in the 12 minute before a cross from Ivanovic was blocked seconds later.

Moussa Sissoko picked up the first yellow card of the game in the 41^st minute for a foul just before half time.

Newcastle were then forced to make their first substitution of the game in the 52^nd minute when Vurnon Anita replaced the injured Cheik Tiote. Yohan Cabaye was handed the captaincy.

Newcastle went on to have four attempts on goal within the space of three minutes with one missed by Cabaye, before shots by Sissoko (assisted by Debuchy) and Remy (assisted by Shola) were saved by Petr Cech. Remy then missed his second shot at goal.

With half an hour to go Chelsea made a double substitution with Samuel Eto replacing Fernando Torres and Willian replacing Juan Mata. Pardew took advantage of the break in play to replace Shola Ameobi with Papiss Cisse.

Yoan Gouffran picked up play with a 67^th minute goal, assisted by Yohan Cabaye’s cross, putting Newcastle into the lead before Chelsea made their final substitution by replacing Frank Lampard with Andre Shurrle.

Both sides had attempts on goal in quick succession following the substitution, with Loic Remy and Samuel Eto both having a go, before David Luiz and Rameries both went into the referees little black book. Chelsea continued to have attempts at goal for the following five minutes.

Alan Pardew replaced Yoan Gouffran with Gabriel Obertan in the 84^th minute of the game and then Newcastle rounded it off with a 2^nd goal in the 88^th minute from Loic Remy who was subsequently booked for taking his shirt off as he ran towards the crowd to celebrate.

The five added minutes were all about Chelsea putting the ball into the box with several missed chances, but the game ended 2-0 with Newcastle breathing a huge sigh of relief at keeping a clean sheet and taking all three points.

Chelsea had 8 corners thoughout the game to Newcastle's 3, whilst Newcastle had 15 shots at goal (8 on target) to Chelseas 13 at goal and 2 on target.
