Player Ratings - Newcastle Utd v Manchester City (A)

Rob Elliot can be awarded Man of the Match for keeping the scoreline as low as 4-0 to Manchester City as Newcastle put in a poor shift at the Etihad Stadium yesterday afternoon. Forum regular Mentalman has rated the players for their participation and performance with some shockingly low scores (for Obertan in particular) highlighting the extent of the sides dismal showing.

Rob Elliot (6) Another good performance from Elliot, he maybe could have done a bit better with the first goal but pulled off a number of quality saves to keep the score lower.

Danny Simpson (5) He didn't have too bad a game considering he had no support from Obertan in the first half and Anita in the second, having said that his positioning was poor at times.

Steven Taylor (6) Overall not too bad a performance but got away with a couple of decisions which could have been given as penalties.

MYM (6) Formed a good partnership with Taylor which meant all the threat was coming from the wide areas.

Jonas Gutierrez (5) had a better game than i was expecting but still struggled.

Gabriel Obertan (2) It was as if he wasn't there, let the man run past him and he would just stop, at one point Clichy was running down the wing and Obertan who should have been closing him down was standing in the centre circle. He made an attacking run and got to Clichy and just stopped, turned around and played the ball back to Simpson! I gave him 2 points simply for being able to find his way onto the pitch and back off it, although he probably had to follow the guy in front of him to do that.

Vurnon Anita (3) Again another player who didn't turn up, i didn't realise he was on the pitch until he gave away a free kick in the 22nd minute, just like Obertan he let players run past him with little or no challenge and then stop! How he stayed on the pitch for 90 mins is beyond me, he would have got a 2 also but he managed 1 good pass to Cisse!

Yohan Cabaye, (5) He had too much to do yesterday with no support from Anita therefore he couldn't get into the match until the 2nd half.

Yoan Gouffran (6) Probably our best attacking player before he went off, helped out Jonas a lot and was a real threat going forward.

Moussa Sissoko (5) Again like cabaye he was having to sacrifice going forward to help out defensively which meant he had little effect on the game, he did however make a few good runs towards the end of the match.

Papiss Cisse (5) he wasn't really in the match much, stranded up front on his own with little support had a couple of good chances and defended well at times.

James Perch (5) Changed the dynamic of the team when he came on and we looked better for it!

Dan Gosling (5) He came on and did ok nothing spectacular and had a good shot.

Gael Bigirimana (5) The game was already lost when he came on and I didn't really notice him doing anything of note.

Ouch! Pardew needs to take a look at these then show his players exactly how they failed to earn their wage yesterday.

I didn't see the same so can't comment further as whether I agree with them or not.

Cheers Mentalman thumbs down

(Sm128)Thanks mental, good job.

The ratings are pretty much as I expected Carys, you were lucky you were having your nails done. It was a miserable game to watch.

You might think 2 was a very low rating for Obertan but he really was missing in action.

I honestly can't remember a player having such a bad performance, in fact it wasn't a performance he was just there!
It would have been a better effort had he got himself sent off in the first minute!
