Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Liverpool

By Tyne-Talk
December 11 2010

Newcastle United host Liverpool this evening after a turbulent week at St James’ Park. Just as things get settled in the North East, Mike Ashley goes and shakes them up again by sacking Chris Hughton and employing the “more experienced” Alan Pardew.

Newcastle have won one game in their last six, drawn two and lost three. Liverpool go into the game on a slight improvement of form having won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six.

Roy Hodgson will be hoping his side take advantage of the instability at Newcastle and walk away with another three points to ensure they go into the festive period in the top half of the table.

Alan Pardew will be hoping that Joey Barton (groin) and Kevin Nolan (ankle) will both return having recovered from their respective injuries, whilst Danny Guthrie who was stretchered off again West Brom with an ankle injury could also feature.

Steve Harper (shoulder) and Leon Best (ankle) are both close to returning, but this game comes too soon, whilst Dan Gosling (knee), Ryan Taylor (ankle) and Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg) are all sidelined through injury.

Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson will both serve the final game of their suspensions and Jose Enrique will make his 100th  League appearance for the club if he plays.

Fernando Torres returns for Liverpool but Steven Gerrard (hamstring), Daniel Agger (calf), Jamie Carragher (shoulder) and Spearing (ankle) are all out through injury.

Fact: Liverpool have won their 4 last games against Newcastle United and scored 14 goals.

Fact: Newcastle United have made 32 substitutions this season – fewer than any other side.

Lee Mason referees.

With some of their big names injured Liverpool might find it tough to beat us. I'm hoping that's the case anyways.

Hopefully the fans will get behind the team.

Fixtures between Newcastle and Liverpool have produced some great games in the past, but with the team we have I can't see anything special happening today.

What a pain the game is on ESPN. I'll to have to wait for the highlights on 'Football First'.

2-2

So D. Guthrie has recovered from his embarrassment then. What's the normal recovery time on that sort of injury? I can't find it anywhere on PhysioRoom.

Don't think it will be a tight game and the first time I have said it on here I reckon we could lose, and if we do it will be big but then on the other hand if the toon win it will be big.

Either Liverpool 4-0 or the Toon 3-0

New Newcastle boss Alan Pardew makes two changes following the defeat at West Brom. Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton come into the midfield instead of Wayne Routledge and Danny Guthrie.

That means our team for today is:

Krul
Simpson S.Taylor Campbell Enrique
Barton Tiote Nolan Jonas
Ameobi Carroll

Kyrgiakos can't handle AC. Gotta work that matchup.

I don't think we're playing 4-4-2.

I don't know what game I was watching earlier. We most certainly are playing 4-4-2. Fortunately neither Meireles nor Lucas is a patch on SG so Nolan's not such a liability at CM.

That's BS. He's absolutely looked for contact.

This now, Silva earlier-as I pointed out during the WC, the Spanish dive as much as anyone in the world.

Good start, but we need to stop Liverpool from passing it around in the midfield and close them down quicker

Enrique looks nervous to me, and some of his passing and touches haven't been the best

Not much running off the ball, but we are keeping our shape.. Shola looking like an old carthorse today... Need Lovenkrands to add some pace up front.

Completely disagree about Shola. He and AC are giving Kyrgiakos & Skertl more than they can handle, and they're playing off each other well.

Barton needs to stop wandering so much.

Ranger made the massive difference today, and I think he has done enough to get a start in the next game

Shola has been cr@p a while and bar the odd goals he scores he doesn't do anything. I would throw in Nile, yes he may not get that many goals but how many will he create of his running

Great result and makes you laugh when you look at the table that CH done such a cr@p job, as if he won this game he would have taken us 4 points of Spurs

Well done AP
