Newcastle United loan star Hatem Ben Arfa could make an early return to competitive football after it was confirmed he is targeting the Tyne-Wear derby on 16th January as a potential return date. Such a comeback could see the 23 year old play a good 10-15 games before the season ends, giving him enough time to prove why the club should sign him on a permanent contract.

The Frenchman who had his leg broken in two places after a horror tackle by Manchester City's Nigel De Jong back in October, has since been through intensive physio and 8 hour a day training sessions which have now enabled him to walk unaided.

He is due in the south of France on Monday to begin work at a rehabilitation centre which could be the key to his early comeback.

Hughton will not be rushing him back and said earlier this week;

"We haven’t seen him at the training ground because he is still very much in the early part of his rehabilitation, but I’ve spoken to him and he is in good spirits.

It is obviously hard for him, a long injury lay-off is always frustrating, but we are happy with how things are going.

There haven’t been any additional complications since he had the operation to repair the leg which is a positive for him and us, and as far as I am aware everything is going well. He is on schedule with everything so far."
