Newcastle United have released a statement confirming that midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa has suffered a broken tibia and fibula of his left leg. He went down in agony after a challenge by Manchester City's Nigel De Jong, who incredibly failed to even pick up a yellow card for the tackle. As Hughton looked on nervously, medics took Ben Arfa from the pitch straight to Manchester Royal Infirmary.

The official club statement read;

"X-rays taken this afternoon have confirmed that he has suffered a broken tibia and fibula of his left leg.

He will undergo surgery tomorrow morning. Everyone connected with the club sends Hatem their best wishes for a speedy recovery.

At this stage no time limit has been put on his expected return date."
