Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Accrington Stanley v Newcastle

By Tyne-Talk
August 25 2010

Newcastle United take to the Crown Ground this evening where Accrington Stanley play host in the 2nd round of the League (Carling) Cup. After a 6-0 win over Aston Villa at the weekend in the Premier League, Newcastle are likely to still be in good spirits and looking to take all 3 points, however as a club they are well aware that the lower league sides often perform on the night.

The League Two side who have just announced plans to move to a bigger stadium within the next five years and are said to have lost their Managing Director David O'Neill this week after he resigned have not lost in their last 6 games. They host on the back of a 3 wins and 3 draws from their last six games, 3 clean sheets in their first 3 league matches. Newcastle who have only played two games for far this season have won one and lost one.

Chris Hughton is without long term absentees, Steven Taylor (dislocated shoulder), Danny Simpson (ankle), Leon Best (ankle) and Dan Gosling (knee). Whilst Sol Campbell is not fully fit this could be an opportunity for him to get some pitch time.

Danny Guthrie who narrowly missed the weekends' match is also expected to miss out today and he will join Xisco on the sidelines, who is suffering a groin injury.

Hughton is likely to rest key players this evening such as Steve Harper and Andy Carroll and opt for a younger team which is expected to include Tim Krul in goal.

Accrington Stanley will make a late assessment on the fitness of Craig Lindfield as he recovers from a knee injury but have no long term injuries to worry about. Manager John Coleman is expected to welcome back Leam Richardson who has made an early recovery from a groin problem.

Fact: Newcastle United and Accrington Stanley have never met on the pitch.

Fact: Accrington Stanley have never made it to the 3rd round of the Carling Cup.

Fact: It has been 7 years since Newcastle United were knocked out of the Carling Cup by lower league opposition and 20 years since they were knocked out in the 2nd round.

Did not catch the whole game but Krul was outstanding. I really feel he can challenge for the number one jersey now. Ranger and Lua Lua were lively as well but Vuckic was quiet. He had some nice touches but wasn't in the game as often as I hoped. Tavenier and Kadar did well too and there were some nice finishes from Lovenkrands, Ameobi and Ryan Taylor for our goals. Taylor's was a scorcher! Well done to the development squad though. Their mission for today has been achieved.

Krul started off poorly at looked shaky, especially the first 10-15 minutes, wouldn't say it was a great performance, but we got through.

Looked like they were going to get back in it in the last few seconds.

rough game full of fouls and no bookings! Ranger did well considering he was pushed out wide, won plenty of balls in the air, Krul was better second half, thought the full back Ferguson was not bad also....

great strike from R.Taylor was right in the angle

agreed with all of that wasim, i would point out i thought ferguson playing left back had a good game as well as ranger, lualua, kadar and tavernier they were our best outfield players.

Vuckic was very quiet as was donaldson. Ameobi was ok, Lovenkrands got the goal but other than that did nowt I was expecting more from him tbh, R Taylor very good finish looked a little shakey at the back tho good going forward. Krul really didnt have any chnace with the goals but played canny. I was very suprised Xisco wasnt giving a run out.

Xisco's been getting some decent time with the first team squad, no reason to send him out today.

We either needed to play a nearly full strength team or go with the one we fieled, no part playing Xisco. Wouldn't say we have got a lot of the game other than resting people and getting through.

Don't think many of the younger lads really proved themselves

Thought I'd heard Xisco was carrying a groin injury. Or did I just dream of Xisco's groin?

I also heard about the Xisco groin problem being the reason he was not involved. Hopefully we both not been dreaming about Xisco's groin! It would have been a decent run out for him.
