Hughton: Carroll Has No Fear

Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton has explained why he awarded the No.9 shirt to striker Andy Carroll, calling him a player who is keen to learn and has no fear. The 21 year old accepted the shirt, and the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of previous Toon legends Alan Shearer, Malcolm MacDonald and Jackie Milburn, earlier in the summer break.

Hughton told Sky Sports;

"He has the potential. He's still learning the game. There's still areas of his game that he needs to improve, but the most important thing is that he's a willing learner.

He will spend time on the training pitch and he has a thirst for knowledge. When I gave him the opportunity to have the number nine shirt, it's something he didn't shirk. He is a player that doesn't play with any fear.

What is important as well, being in the area, is that he is a local lad. There are a lot of reasons why I felt very comfortable giving him the number nine shirt."
