Official LUFC Statement: Beckford To Stay At Leeds

Leeds United have confirmed that 26 year old striker Jermaine Beckford has asked for the transfer request he handed to the club in December, to be recalled and that he will be staying at the club. The news will come as a huge blow for Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton who has Beckford in his sights as one of his key January signings to see Newcastle through the rest of the season.

The statement on the official Leeds United wesbite states; 

"Leeds United are pleased to confirm that striker Jermaine Beckford will be staying on at Elland Road for the remaining duration of his contract (to May 2010).

Conversations have been ongoing with the player and his representative since a transfer request was handed in on December 30.

The subsequent public knowledge of his transfer request has not been helpful in terms of stability, but having spoken with Jermaine all parties have decided it is in everyone's best interests that he stays until the end of the season and continues to help the club's bid for promotion.

This is despite several financial offers that have been made to the club."
