Damien Duff is on his way to Fulham if press reports are to be believed. The Irishman is said to be in talks with the club after Newcastle United agreed a £4million fee. The move will worry fans who have so far seen very little effort made to replace any of the key players the club have sold.
Fulham Manager Roy Hodgson said;
"The clubs are talking and I hope the deal will go through. He's a player that interests us.
Damien and I go back a long way from when we worked together at Blackburn. He wants to come back to west London.
Damien had injury problems at Chelsea and has done well at Newcastle given the turmoil there.
Every time he's played for Ireland he's consistently been one of their best performers.
We know what we'd be getting with Damien - he's an experienced and quality player."
Damien Duff has now been withdrawn from the squad for tonight's game against Reading.
This would be good IF the money coming in for him/the others who have gone out were to be used on strengthening the squad, as this is not the case, most likely, it just means another starting player gone and a weaker squad.
I think we'll miss him. He always gave 100% and could have been a key player for us in the championship. Hopefully with the wage bill decreasing slowly, buyers will start thinking the club is more appealing now.
We need all the players we can get - if we get injuries (which we will) we are screwed.
I think this is a very shortsighted sale. I'm disappointed we are selling Duff, not because im his biggest fan but because he does contribute he does work hard and we dont have enough players.
yeah he would have been good in this league but with his wages and that transfer amount reported 4m is really good for player that old and that injured. Sad but true - he had to go.
Cappen is right, reducing the wage bill has to come first regardless of he player, Duff would have been a hit but was on far to much money. We need players in, but even if we don't get them we still need to lose quite a few players otherwise the club will get into further debt
What kind of charges/compensation would we incur if we released players? Thinking of Geremi here since there seems to be no interest at all in him and he's apparently on £60k a week.
Guys, you're overlooking the fact that Duff is past it, and we're recovering 80% of the fee we paid for him, despite the fact that he's suffered a serious injury since and is a winger who's lost step or two since coming to us.
Our performance on Saturday showed how much we need Duff, and the harsh truth is: not much. Think about it. We don't need him in the CCC and if we get back to the PL, who wants him in our squad? We were playing him at LB, ffs!
If we don't get any players in, that's madness. But this sale, taken on its own, is good business.
As with each player we've sold so far we have made good money for them, can't say that we're just buckling under pressure to sell. But we do need players in and as soon as possible.
At the moment can we afford to bring players in, it doesn't look like we have a transfer budget so loans or out of contracts are the only options.
The only problem is we have loads of debt and a wage bill far to high for this division, so by taking on more players it will increase the debt.
I fully agree we need players but reckon this is what Ashley is thinking. Unless the takeover happens we will be stuck with the squad less a few players
