I don't think we can be missing much, David Craig (Sky) says Newcastle were booed off at half time.

I was at the match and it was dreadful, to make matters worse Leeds looked sh@t as well, we had the better chances but the passing looked awful. Barton played OK and looked that he was up the challenge but looked once or twice that he could have lost it. Personally I think if we play like that then we are f@ck@d and will be lucky to finish mid table. We have to get rid of a few players and get a few in as there is no real confidence

I don't understand Houghton's infatuation with Smudge. What does Alan Smith bring to the pitch? He's a striker, who can't score or create, being played as a CM.

I'd like to see more of Donaldson as both he and Lua Lua have the ability to play out wide.

I still don't understand why we got rid of Doninger. Even if he wasn't going to see the pitch this season, he only bagged 12 goals in 15 matches last year for the ressies. I don't care if you're playing against second stringers or not, scoring that often from the midfield deserves some credit.

I think Smith is seen as a ball winner, but we have Barton and Butt, we need a creative midfielder that can go past people and actually pass the ball. Smith was ok on the night but not 50k worth, so it is time to f@ck him off

Guthrie, Barton, Nolan and Butt are all willing to get physical and win the ball as well. Of the five, I think Butt is the least useful as his speed is consistently a problem. Guthrie's passing needs to be better, but he's got a decent cross and set piece. Nolan finally seemed to be coming around towards the end of the season once he started pushing forward. Barton is the best of them, but there's so much drama surrounding him that what should be a yellow will often be turned into a Red.

I fully understand starting Smith on occasion, but he shouldn't be wearing the armband. Harper, Taylor, and Duff are more deserving.

Right now my choice for starting 11 to start the season looks like:

Harper
Beye Bassong Taylor Enrique
Lua Lua Barton Guthrie/Nolan Duff/Jonas
Carrol Ranger

Bench: Shoala, Smith, Krul, Kadar, Colo, Donaldson, Xisco, Tozer

Smith's continuing presence in these sides is a bona fide enigma. Ball winner? A guy who racks up yellow cards at the rate he does? Doubt it.

Also don't understand why the washed-up dreck that we learned last season are useless are starting all of these games. Wouldn't it be more useful to try to get an idea of what we can expect from the kids? This pre-season has been completely useless.

I never said that I see Smith is a ball winner, but stated he may be seen as one by the club. I think he is sh@t and a waste of space and should be sold straight away. Fully agree that Barton, Guthrie, Nolan and Butt are better. The pre season is sh@t, what is the point of not trying kids and seeing how they do, as they are the ones that will be here when the transfer window shuts. The big name players would have f@cked off and left us

Exactly, we might as well have been playing Wallsend under 10's for all the good its done us.

I agree TOON. If they had a pole asking which player would you most like to see leave the club, I bet Smith would be one of the most chosen.
Why do they keep saying he's a forward, he never scores.

Don't see how he can be regarded as a striker any more. Don't see how he can be regarded as a footballer any more either tbh...

Oh my bloody god people, I've just had a horrendous thought......

Whats worse than having Smith in your team?
What worse than having Ameobi in your team?

.......Give up?

Having Smith AND Ameobi in your team as your 2 senior forwards (Sm89)

Ameobi and Simth have to go, Smith is sh@t, he is not a forward anymore and in midfield he is garbage. Ameobi isn't good enough, him and Carroll are not a good partnership up front, and Carroll is far better, so why keep Ameobi. Get both of these out the club as quick as you can. Smith might get bids for some reason but can't see anybody going for Ameobi, never really played in the premiership and would cost to much for the championship clubs

There's no questioning the fact that Ameobi and Carroll can't play together up front. The issues, however, are that Carroll can't play up top by himself and, even if he could, we don't have the midfielders to supply him with the crosses he should be getting.

Carroll needs someone fast to play up top with him that can get behind the defense. Lua Lua has the pace, but I much prefer to have him on the wing. Having Lovenkrands would have worked as well, but that situation was royally !@#$ed up by Ashley. If we want to play a wide 4-3-3 with Duff and Lua Lua out wide and high, that might suffice, but a 4-5-1 is simply not going to work and a 4-4-2 with Ameobi is even worse.

Without Mikey or Martins, we have to bring in a striker with some pace. Unfortunately, that's a huge commodity and we don't have any way to get a player of that style right now.

Waffles your right that Carroll needs someone up front who is quick. At the moment with the players we have we don't have any solutions to the second centre forward spot and can't see us playing a 4-5-1 as we don't have any attacking midfielders to get up there quick enough to other support. So unless we get players in then it is going to have to be a 4-4-2.

For me I think probably the best team is going to be:
Harper
Beye, Taylor, Bassong, Enrique
Lua Lua, Guthrie, Barton, Guturiez
Carroll, Nolan

and that is playing Nolan out of position and we can keep hold of the players
