Steve Harper takes on his former club Huddersfield Town tonight as Newcastle United look for their 3rd successive pre-season victory. The 34 year old keeper is looking forward to going back to Huddersfield where former team-mate Lee Clark is in control, but isn't looking forward to starting another season without a permanent manager in post. He also made it clear once more he would nominate Alan Shearer as manager over any competition.

Harper told the Gazette;

"It's no secret Alan wants to come back as manager, and if you believe what you hear, the groups want him to take over as manager.

It would be ideal for everybody if he was appointed and he could get cracking.

He's got a head start on anyone wanting to be manager. He's had eight weeks working with these players, and he knows who's on board, and who might not be on board.

He knows who he thinks he can rely on in the Championship, and who he can't.

It's a no-brainer to give him the job, but whether it's him or anybody else, we just wish we could press fast forward, and it was all sorted.

It'll be great to go back to Huddersfield, having played there.

I told Lee Clark what a great club it was, and I went to watch them towards the end of last season when they played Hartlepool, another one of my clubs.

I saw a few familiar faces, and it'll be the first time I've gone back and played, hopefully."
