Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid and has called it a ‘compliment' to be linked to such a club. He also hasn't ruled out the idea of a move, despite previous indications he would stay at Newcastle as they prepare for the Championship next season.

Enrique said;

"They are one of the major teams in the Spanish league.  

Who would not want to play at a club like Atletico? I think any player would like to play with the shirt of Rojiblanca.

I still have three years left on my contact with Newcastle, but I am very grateful and it is a compliment (to be linked with Atletico).

From above (the Newcastle board) have not done things well, and we played a very bad season.

On a personal level, it is clear that the decline is very bad for me.

Enrique, who has made 49 Premier League appearances has sparked interest from Fulham and West Ham as well as A.Madrid added;

"I do not have a preference about which country, I am open to anything. In Spain people live well and eat well, but I have enjoyed my adventure in England.

The Premier League is the best in the world and I would study anything that came up.

Mentally I am exhausted. I could see for a long time that we could go down as many things at Newcastle have gone wrong. From the start we have not done things well and we have had such a bad season.

On a personal level it is obvious that relegation is something very negative."

It is thought that Newcastle who paid £6.3M for Enqriue in 2007 would be prepared to sell him for just £4M.

He looks awfully like Bassong in that picture!

Not surprised we've got interest in him and that we'll get back a reasonable amount, would have liked him to stay but was always a long shot.
