Martins To Play Through Pain Barrier

Newcastle United Striker Obafemi Martins has delayed another bout of surgery to see Newcastle stay in the Premier League. The Nigerian International will go under the knife at the end of the season after flying out to Milan last week for discussions. The specialist he met confirmed he needed another groin operation but after talks with manager Alan Shearer, Martins has decided to play on.

The 24 year old will not have painkilling injections after being advised that they could cause long term damage but has told Shearer he will play where he can.

The extent of the injury explains why Martins didn't start against Tottenham last weekend.

Alan Shearer said before Martins saw the specialist;

"We have a few different scenarios for Oba. One, an operation, two an injection, three rest, four play through the pain barrier.

We know obviously what we want him to do; it is just a case of how much pain that will cause him. The favoured option is to try and play through the pain barrier and see where we get to at the end of the season. An op would rule Oba out for the season, rest and we'd lose him for two or three weeks and it would be the same with an injection."
