Shearer: My Players Gave Me Fantastic Effort

By Tyne-Talk

Today's press is full of reports of yesterday's Newcastle v Chelsea match, many speculating that the 2-0 defeat could seal Newcastle's relegation place, whilst others concentrate on Shearer's optimism and determination to save ‘his' club. Either way, this was Chelsea we played. A team with just 5 defeats all season compared to their 18 wins.

Shearer said;

"I'm still confident that we can avoid the drop and my players are too, which is more important. One game is a long time and we have seven left to play this season - so I'm sure there'll be twists and turns.

My players gave me fantastic effort as I knew they would and we're going to need every ounce of that between now and the end of the season.

There'll be no pointing fingers at anyone, we're in this together and we'll be united in the dressing room.  Results-wise, other teams' (situations) have gone against us as well, so we know we are in a fight and we will give it a fight.

I enjoyed it, I'm putting a brave face on as I'm very disappointed, but I enjoyed the build up (to the match) and would have enjoyed (the day) a hell of a lot more if we had a point or three.

The linesman has made a mistake but we all make them. What it might have done was give us a rousing last five or 10 minutes, but it was certainly not his fault that we lost the game today."

Shearer stepped out at St James' Park to 52,000 fans, knowing that securing points would be a dream-come true; but the reality is that his campaign for survival starts next week when Newcastle face Stoke City, one of many teams who also fear a relegation battle.

Just to try and sound positive - we were playing against a top four side. Let's judge the performance, committment, effort after the Stoke game.

We should piledrive Stoke City.

Owen to score 2 with Butt getting a third

3-1 to us

i can see us winning but 1-0 stoke are very very solid at home its not a easy game by any stretch of the imagination there are the 3rd best in the league at home we really need a big performance to take all the points home

Basically we have no creative players in midfield which is why we are not scoring / not winning.

Shearer has fell into the trap of playing the same rubbish that has let us down all season.

Training will not improve these players over seven games. His only hope is to be brave with a new system or take a gamble on different personell.

Lualua out on loan.

He needs to be brave and play the kids; sitting some of the regulars is the only thing that's going to make them give a damn, anyway.

Though I did see some effort, and I thought Butt's performance was fairly inspired. Definitely no class, though. And hell, my cable went out just after the hour mark, so...
