Newcastle United midfielder Nicky Butt looks unlikely to be fit for Wednesday's match against his former club Manchester United. Butt played 66 minutes of yesterdays 1-0 defeat against Bolton before being forced to leave the pitch with a knee injury. He was replaced by Cameroon International Geremi who could now start in midweek as Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton & Danny Guthrie all carry injuries.

Caretaker manager Chris Hughton has confirmed the injury but insisted that the club will not be able to say whether Butt will be fit for Wednesday until after this afternoon's assessment.

He said;

"Nicky's has tweaked his knee. We won't know the extent of it until later today, but, of course, we're hopeful it's very minor.

In the past, it's an area we've suffered in. Guthrie will still be another two or three weeks away, and Joey Barton's another three or four weeks away as well.

These are the things that test us, and what we have is Geremi, who came in and did well in the period of time he was on, and Alan Smith, who was on the bench.

There are also other players who can move into different formations."

He also added that Damian Duff has a 50% chance of being fit to play against Manchester United after struggling with a calf injury which ruled him out of yesterday's squad.

i hope we can find someone to replace butt for this fixture anyway. i don't like him representing us against united.
