Chris Hughton who has once again been plunged into the caretaker manager role in Joe Kinnear's absence has confirmed that until the club know whether Kinnear, who is currently in hospital having undergone a triple heart by-pass, will be able to return to managing the club, that he will continue to look after the team and coaching responsibilities. Hughton has wished his colleague a swift recovery and made it clear he is much more confident about taking the reigns now the club is in a more secure position.

"We all feel for Joe and wish him well. The ideal scenario, and the one that we all want to see, is Joe back amongst things before the end of the season.

He's out for a period of at least two months but when he can actually come back, that is a matter for the doctors.

Until then I've been told that nothing will change - I'll look after the side assisted by Colin Calderwood. I don't know what has been said elsewhere, but that is something that has been said to me.

I have been in this position before but the circumstances are very different now. What I was aware of is that last time I took the reins it was a very difficult period.

Kevin had just gone, the first game I took was against the backdrop of protests and there was a fair amount of indecision from the players, they didn't know what was going to happen. It coincided with key players being missing.

At this stage, as a group, we're in a better position now than we were then. I'm more comfortable and more confident now than I was then."

He added;

"The situation regarding Joe is a different one for the players. But in football you do get used to dealing with lots of different things.

What I have been through over the years is managers coming and going and the changing of regimes.Things change constantly but you have to adapt to them.

I think that moving away from Joe's situation, what they do know now is that the window is closed and all the speculation that comes with it is also gone.

There is no more talk about takeovers either. What they know
now is that there is not going to be change.

We have to get on with it, and what you will see is a pulling together of this group of lads.

You will see more of that in coming weeks too. And all we can hope is that will take us into some good results."

Kinnear won't be back; I don't know what all this noncommittal bs is about. And Hughton is still in way over his head.

Good god, get Bruce, Sven or El Tel in, quick!

I completely agree. If Joe were to attempt to come back I think it would be a very foolish move.

maybe they dont want to publically write the old boy off as useless when he's having such a tough time, to put it mildly?


it hardly matters when they say it, he's our ex-manager. the fact is though, we couldnt attract a manager a few months ago, so we cant expect to just now until we know what div we'll be in next season. its gonna be hughton, i guess, til summer.
