Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear has told of his hopes to have midfielder Joey Barton and striker Alan Smith back in the new-year and how he expects to have both Damian Duff and Shola Ameobi back for the clubs away game at Portsmouth next weekend.
Joey Barton's latest stint on the sidelines, this time due to knee ligament damage, is likely to continue until mid January meaning he will have had 9 weeks out through injury in addition to a 12 match ban with 6 matches suspended.
Kinnear said:
“We have just had Joey’s injury re-assessed and the doctor and physio team tell me we can expect to have him back in the middle of January. And now that he has a date to aim for, it will give Joey a big lift.
The same applies to Alan Smith, who we are hoping to have back with us by the end of January following his injury problems. But at this moment in time we do not know when Ignacio Gonzalez will be returning.”
On Duff and Ameobi, who both missed last weekends match against Middlesbrough he added:
“Shola has an ankle and foot injury and he is doubtful for Saturday. He is probably 50-50, but I don’t think it would be wise to risk him.
While Damien Duff will not make Saturday, I am expecting him to be with us when we go to Portsmouth next weekend.”
