Derby County have confirmed they have rejected an approach by Newcastle United FC for 19 year old midfielder Giles Barnes. Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is yet to add to his squad since his arrival on Tyneside at the beginning of the transfer window, after an alleged almost done deal with Jonathon Woodgate fell through, seeing him move to Spurs yesterday.
Derby manager Paul Jewell confirmed a move had been made, rebuffed and then praised his young player, who he sees as a prized asset at the club, who currently sit bottom of the league with just 7 points from 23 matches.
"We got a phone call from Newcastle United, but the valuation was no way near what we believe he is worth.
I would like to keep him but if the player wanted to go and the money was right, we would not stand in his way.
Giles Barnes is going to be a terrific player in the future.
When I see other players leaving for £4million or £5million what we want for Barnes is not unreasonable.
He is not going to leave here on the cheap because he is a player we would like to keep.
But if Giles wants to go and play somewhere else, he wants to play in the Premier League, we won't stand in his way, as long as that is right for the club."
Jewell has not ruled out a move for Barnes before the transfer window shuts should the money be right.
