Once again the Newcastle team of today was booed off the pitch by supporting fans as they crashed to a 1-0 defeat at the JJB Stadium against Wigan. The game was stale from the start and the players looked like they would rather be else where as they failed to create a decent opportunity in the whole of 90 minutes.

Wigan's Ryan Taylor scored the only goal in the 64th minute, with a great free kick which lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Sam Allardyce decribed his teams performance as "awful" and said he side had "Failed Miserably":

"Awful, for the want of a better word. You have to prepare to face people who are fighting for their lives and Wigan are doing that since Steve (Bruce) took over.

We picked a side to live with the tempo we knew they would try and play at, and simply from start to finish we didn't manage to.

We gave away too many silly free-kicks, and conceded a goal which could have been avoided.

There was the same amount of chances for both sides, but the free-kick turned it in Wigan's favour in the end.

Wigan worked hard, and didn't allow us to play, but when that happens you have to roll up your sleeves, use your skills and brain power to overcome that, and Wigan were very good at that. I can't knock them for that.

We have failed in 90 minutes to get a shot on target. We came here to win and we have failed miserably.

The disappointment of Derby may have carried over, but we have now played two winnable games and only taken a point which is unacceptable in my view,"
