I predicted in yesterday’s prediction league preview that Stranraer would be a strong tough team that would be difficult to break down and that’s how it turned out, in the opening half hour we had a few chances but once Billy Ried’s Stranraer settled in to the game Airdrie just couldn’t progress.
When looking at the match it was interesting to read that Stranraer finished two points above us we didn’t beat them at home in season 2015-2016.
Willie Gibson brought Stranraer close to an opener when his cross was nodded on, it looked net bound until Ferguson tipped it on to the cross bar.
Both teams suffered from a lack of composure in front of goal several chances were squandered until finally Brown split the Stranraer defence releasing Ryan who races forward to slip the ball under Belford in the Stranraer goal.
The second half of yesterday match was just horrible it really felt like we were seeing the worst of last season all over again as the game wore on we speculated how late a goal Stranraer would score, if they scored one would they then go on to score more and then referee Craig Charleston handed Stranraer the chance they needed when he awarded Stranraer a penalty.
From where I was sitting I couldn’t see what happened but the referee said MacDonald pulled, pushed or hit one of Stranraer attackers, no one in the Stranraer teamed claimed for it, the linesman didn’t put his flag up but there was no arguments Stranraer had their chance and their top scorer Malcolm stepped up.
The shot low to the keepers right was saved comfortably by Ferguson and Airdrie still had the lead. Teams usually take inspiration from moments like this and push on, not us yesterday we just could seem to progress in front of goal and the chances we had were squandered. But it was just us
Stranraer hit the cross bar once again but it was the closest either team were going to come.
