Hume and Fonners amongst those to leave as Rovers release seven players.......
Tranmere Rovers have today agreed to release a total of seven players, all of whose contracts were scheduled to terminate at the end of the season. The players departing Prenton Park today are; Peter Brezovan, Adam Dugdale, Iain Hume, Kayode Odejayi, Rob Taylor, Josh Thompson and Owain Fon Williams.
In addition to the seven departures, a new contract has been offered to home grown youth team graduate Max Power in the hope that he will stay for the fight to get back into the Football League next season although should he decide to leave, the contract offer will ensure that Tranmere would at least recieve some compensation due to Max's age.
Owain Fon Williams was probably the highest profile departure from Tranmere today
The Club have also confirmed that it will be taking up the one year contract options for youngsters Liam Davies and goalkeeper Sam Ramsbottom for next season.
Speaking to the Tranmere Rovers Official Website this morning, Tranmere Chairman Mark Palios said of the announcements......
"I'd like to thank these players for their time at Tranmere and particularly Iain Hume and Owain Fon Williams, both of whom have spent a good proportion of their careers at Tranmere and have made a lot of friends around the Club and amongst its supporters. Allowing them to leave early gives them the maximum time to consider what they want to do next, and we wish them all the best for the future."
"In Sam and Liam's case, our coaching staff feel that they have the potential for further development and they are part of our plans for next season, whilst Max is a player who we believe has a very bright future in the game and we would like him to stay at the Club as long as possible to help us regain our Football League status"
Tranmere concluded their statement by confirming that newly appointed Manager Gary Brabin will discuss with the remaining players over the next two weeks as to who will remain in his plans for the Club's first season in the National League.

It is highly unlikely that it will just be seven going and if we are to have fewer loan players than last year that means up to ten new faces.
It would be nice to see some quick decisons but I suppose that some targets may try to secure a league club before dropping to the conference

happy with them going, no complaints, could do with power and jennings getting off as well, no fight and a pair of serial losers
Got to say will be sorry to see fonners go even tho I feel its the right decision. Such a nice bloke so would like to wish him well for the future.
Well Sam and Luke are a good place to start. One goalkeeper needed I'd say with some experience and then utilise two of our own!
One thing is for sure, we will have to look hard to get someone as good as Fon Williams down at this level.

Yeah i agree with Deadly.
Not the most commanding GK, but we haven't had a good a shot stopper since Achterberg

Fonners best keeper since achto 100% gutted he has gone but he will still want to be in the wales squad and on a few bob to i imagine. Id say one experienced keeper to bring pilling/ramsbottom through. If pilling was a bit taller and put on a bit of muscle mass he has the talent to be unbelievable!
I'm surprised at brezovan going tbh. I thought he would be ok in the conference and a fairly low earner.
Hopefully that means Timmins will soon be off as well.

I liked Fonners, I think this year he didn't play to his best and was at fault a few times. To his defence though, he played with an awful back 4 in front of him. Good luck to him, he stayed longer than I thought he ever would do.

If we keep Holmes and Hill and the rest go that is a bonus for me. Brabin can then get in his own players. Still VERY early days yet and most players contracts run to 1st June so no panic

Of the rest am not bothered, They wasn't up for the fight in league 2 so doubt they would in conference....most of them think they were already to good to be in league 2!

What exactly is meant by released? In theory could they have offered Fonners a deal he says no so as his contract has expired it converts to being released as free agent?

Iain will be back in Autumn when the Indian league finishes, he will be happy to play in the conference if wanted.
Don't want Hume back. Hope Jennings leaves. Offer Holmes a deal and transfer list Donnelly and Ridehalgh.
My priority for out would be Holness. In sixty five years of watching Rovers, he ranks as one of the most inept defenders of all time.

I have to agree that he looked almost out his depth in the air and on the ground. He always seemed too small to be playing centre-back although I appreciate height isn't always a deciding factor for that position.
I too never rated him. With any luck he had a relegation clause which means we can get rid/he can't afford to stay!
I would like to see Holmes & Laird offered deals as, for me, they at least showed some effort. Would have kept Odejayi as I think he could hold up the ball well, but hopefully that sort of player will be easy to come by, its a goal scorer (or 2) that we need

There is always a tendency for newly appointed managers to bring in players they have previously worked with.
Just hope we don't end up as a Southport Old Boys Club.
All players arriving need to be signed to play a part and need to be the best we can afford.
No mates or over rated journeymen.
This is an ideal opportunity for a total rebuild, let's not squander the opportunity by signing even more dross and failures.

Holness got injured against Morecambe. Upto that point we had lost 3 games in 17 since Micky Adams came in. After Bob Holness done his knee in we won 4 games in 22. Stats dont lie! People might not have liked him but he got the job done and everywhere he has been fans say the same.
Marc Holness seemed to read the game well and was a good leader. Not the best CD we have had but maybe OK at Conferece level.
Holness is not the greatest but never lacked effort. Think he can do a job in Conference. We've had far worse this season let alone the past. Ladies and gents I give you ..... Godwin Antwi.
Agree with Pete TRFC,Holness to be fair was good with his head,Ridehalgh I think is still under contract,he is defiantly the worst defender I have ever seen

He wasn't great but seemed to suffer from the need for some fans to have a scapegoat. Defo not as bad as some of the others, I never rated Thompson but some people seemed to like him.
Laird also suffered from the scapegoat syndrome, I didn't like him at first but think 2nd half of season was one of our most consistent players.
Think we need to be realistic with who we can sign, some people seem to think we are still in league 1 or championship with their expectation of players ability.

Dugdale can also be classed in the scapegoat category too. It's all opinion though I guess.... I didn't like Holness but didn't dislike Dugdale or Thompson but that's just my take.
Agreed. Although my disappointment with him was lack of leadership. I was expecting more talking organising and generally getting more out of the people around him.
Half the issue with that though, was the fact we didn't have the same team out twice! Also, sometimes it seamed players were arriving at the club in the kit, and the first time they met was during the warm up.
I though he was an ok league 2 defender, no higher though. Should be ok in the conference, which is lucky as he has a contract lol

Holness always showed effort for me so did Laird and Danny H.Very sad that Holness and Hill got injuredearly dooors, like to have seen them fit and playing. Holness was the best header we had at Tranny last season imo . Would have liked to have seen him up for the corners.Thompson looked to have promise but he was never the same after he go that nasty head injury.
Seriously , Holness was awful , yes he showed effort but had absolutely no positional sense at all , him and Dugdale were the worst defenders I can remember in recent history (and that's saying something).
The thought of Holness , Ridealgh, Holmes or Ihwieke anywhere near our back four next season frightens me!!
They all looked shot of any confidence last aeason and although granted Holmes can't be faulted for effort I think we need a complete new back 4.

Mooney started the season as Nr 1 but, as their form struggled he became the boo boy's scapegoat and was substituted in a home game at half time with York 2.0 down.
Never regained his position and was loaned to Alfreton in the conference who were relegated.
IMO decent enough in the few games he started for us but, turned down a new contract to move to York.

So is that how they persuaded him; lots of Bollinger and salmon sandwiches in the exec boxes every 2-3 weeks, then face him with the reality of an ailing team, with a budget of less than £1,000,000, which it probably will be I'd suppose and then say more Bollinger Mr Brabin?

More like a multipack of "cif" and mega pack of kitchen roll, and 10% off his next purchase at Home and Bargain that would of clinched the deal.
i assume the budget will be more than a mil, speaking to a friend who works for chester, he was saying that forest green are one of the biggest spenders at around 2mil+. i reckon we could be spending close to 1.5mil.
1 million only gives you 19.2k a week for wages and in last nights interview he said alot of clubs have a squad of 30, he also said 50k generated from comedy night would get you a striker but not a very good one though so you will be looking 1.5k a week for a decent forward and we will need two of them because am greedy.

We're going to need at least two very good strikers in this league, the teams that go up at this level generally score more than 90 goals in a season.
We're also going to need a well drilled and experienced back four too, no good scoring bags of goals and having a back four display like we've had in the last two campaigns.
Going to take quite a bit of investment if we are serious about mounting a challenge to get back into the Football League at the first attempt.

I'd be surprised. The budget was less than that in league one and the sponsorships and a half decent income from a few comedy nights might be be needed to compensate for the loss of revenue caused by 2 relegation's and the budget was reported as £1,000,000 last season, just before Palios took over.
However I'd be more than willing to dispel my surprise, if any purported budget figures were close to what you said.
