On-loan Blackburn Rovers defender Jay McEveley says he is considering switching his national allegiance.

The 20-year-old defender may take advantage of new rules that allow players under the age of 21 to switch international sides despite being capped at carious levels.

 

Jay has been capped by England at under 21 level but he is eligible to play for Scotland through his grandfather.

 

McEveley: “I have to weigh up my options of playing regular full international football and Scotland is a possibility. I'm looking at the full squad and thinking, 'if I'm playing in the Premiership in a couple of years' time and playing well, am I going to get ahead of Ashley Cole or Wayne Bridge?'

 

“Even if I was to move across to centre-half, England have half a dozen top-quality players for that position, so again I have to look at that and consider the Scotland option.

 

“When Graeme Souness was my manager at Blackburn he was on about me playing for Scotland and said the manager - it was Berti Vogts at the time - had been on to him about me.

 

“Now the Ipswich manager, Joe Royle, has said that he would be willing to put in a word with the present manager, Walter Smith.”
