Newcastle midfielder Scott Parker will face between three and five weeks on the sidelines after it was revealed he will have a minor knee operation this afternoon following a clash during the Magpies' 4-2 win at West Ham last month.
The former Chelsea player has been impressive in the games he has played so far for United, but was forced to sit out of the Tyne-Tees derby on Monday.
It was first believed that Parker would most likely be fit to make a return against Fulham on January 14, but the England international will be in a London hospital this afternoon for minor surgery - lengthening his absence.
Speaking to the Official Newcastle website, Toon boss Graeme Souness said: "Scott went to see a specialist in London and it was felt he may have damaged cartilage so it was best to have the operation done sooner rather than later.
"It's another blow for the club and for the player, but these are the cards we have been dealt, and we have to stick together and get on with things.
"It's a shame for Scott because he has been our best player this season and to lose him is a blow for everyone concerned."
