Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has returned to light training following a successful hip operation at the end of last season - and is still on course to return to action in August.
It was feared that the 23-year-old could be out of action until September or October, but Toon boss Graeme Souness has insisted that Ameobi is on course to return to action against Bolton on the 23rd August - once he has served the second and third games of his Premiership suspension, picked up for an incident involving Everton's Tim Cahill on the final day of last season.
If the Magpies' were to progress that far, Shola's return could be the second leg of the Intertoto Cup final.
GRAEME SOUNESS: "Shola's going well and we hope to have him right for the third Premiership game of the season.
"In fact, pre-season as a whole is going well. However, it's especially tough, as we're playing so early. We're looking to push them but not so much that they pick up injuries."
