Newcastle manager Graeme Souness has said he hopes to sign Inter Milan’s Emre by this week but that he won’t play in the Inter-Toto.

Newcastle have been trying to sign Emre for the past couple of weeks and it seems the deal may finally go through.

Geordie fans have been getting frustrated by the lack of signings, as Emre had a choice between his home country of Turkey, or the Premiership. The Prime Minister of Turkey even called the midfielder to plead with him to make a move back to his home town.

But after Freddy Shepherd revealed that the Emre deal is close, Souness has said he wants the midfielder by the end of the week, but he will NOT play him in the Inter-Toto either.

Souness said:

"I hope we can get Emre done this week but even if we that happens we would rest him at the weekend.

"He was playing until three weeks ago and hasn't had much rest. If Alan Shearer is fit, he will be involved.

"Last season, the cup runs took their toll and our Premiership form cost us everything.

"We can't let that happen again."
