Graeme Souness says he would love Alan Shearer to stay on another season, despite the striker planning on retiring at the end of the current campaign.

Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, Souness said:

"I don't think he would need much persuading if he was getting 20 or more goals this season.

"If he had a good season and we had a good season then I don't think he would take much persuading.

"Providing he's doing the business I'd love him around the place.

"I think the key to Alan staying is if we have a good season and he scores goals.

"He lives off goals. They are his bread and butter - his trademark. He's Mr. Newcastle and he's been great for me, very supportive in the dressing room.

"He's a proper player and a proper human being.

"You don't play the way he does at 34, in the position he does, with the injuries he has had and scoring the goals he does, without playing with passion.

"He's not a big guy. He's been bashed around but still comes back for more."
