FREDDY WANTS BARCA PAIR

Shepherd was in Glasgow to see Barca take on Celtic and took advantage of the visit to enquire about the availability of the two players.

The Sunday Sun says that manager Sir Bobby Robson and chairman Freddy Shepherd were told that the success of any renewed move for Kluivert this summer will be decided on wether or not the Spannish club themselves reach the Champions League.

Shepherd and Laporta also discussed Argentine striker Javier Saviola - who is now settled in Spain after failing to impress Sir Bobby with his sending-off in the midweek UEFA Cup defeat.

Newcastle will face competition for Patrick Kluivert, after Arsenal vice-president David Dein has confirmed that Barcelona offered them the Dutch striker.

"Right now Kluivert does not interest us," said Dein.

"Patrick was offered to us but at the moment he does not enter the plans of manager Arsene Wenger."
