Newcastle United's Welsh international striker Craig Bellamy (who has returned to reserve action for the first time since October) has praised his surgeon for saving his career after a host of operations on a continuing knee injury. Jimmy Walker

The 24-year-old said his return was all down to American specialist Richard Steadman - who has also been credited with saving Alan Shearer's career.

Bellamy told the club's official website: "There is no doubt that he [Steadman] has saved my career.

"I did not think I would be coming back, to be honest. I can never thank him enough for what he has done for me. I have spoken to him a few times and told him that.

"It's like someone has given me a new knee and said 'go on, here's your career', which means a lot because I was really down at one stage."

Following Shearer's return from numerous injuries, Bellamy said: "I have taken inspiration from Alan Shearer, who has had so many operations in his career, and that is very important to me because you do get down.

"I have never worked so hard in my life as I have over the last couple of months.

"The operation was vital, but the rehabilitation is so important and the physios deserve credit for that. I owe them so much as well."

Bellamy COULD play some part in Newcastle's Premiership match against Birmingham City on Saturday.
