Hayward admitted that Cort's history of injuries raised many doubts over the move to Molineux.

Carl Cort made just 28 appearances during his 3 1/2 years at St James' Park, but Wolves' chairman Hayward is confident that the striker's injury problems have been left in the dark following a medical.

"We have been watching him for a long time and it was not a unanimous decision on the board," said Hayward.

"My father and various other people were questioning it but you have to do your homework beforehand.

"Carl has gone through rigorous testing. I met him a few days ago and chatted to him and I believe he is a good signing.

"He did for Wimbledon, but a number of things went wrong for him at Newcastle.

"Carl is still only 26, is big and we need players like that up front."

Cort himself is determined to use this chance to prove himself and to try and get his career back on the track.

"It hurt me to spend so much time out of action but every setback was genuine," said Cort.

"I see this move as a chance to revitalise my career and fulfil my potential.

"I know I have not played in The Premiership for a while but I'm fit now and believe I can do a job."
