SPEED NOT SURPRISED

Speed is a close friend of Fulham boss Chris Coleman and said: "It was his pace and ability in the air that stood out.

"Sometimes, coming from another country, it is difficult to settle in that quickly. Newcastle was his first port of call and, though he played well, he didn't produce the consistent form he has shown at Fulham.

"But I think the five-month loan spell he had with us from Metz did him good. He got used to English football. That was his bedding-in period here.

"He worked hard at his game and deserves all he is getting now. I thought he was going to be a good player.

"He scored a vital winner for us in the FA Cup fifth-round replay at Blackburn but fractured his cheekbone before the semi-final. That devastated him and was it for him at Newcastle really. He went home and then on to Fulham."
