Newcastle United captain Alan Shearer - who is being urged to return to International duty - felt that his side deserved to win today’s 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool and admitted that some top-class goalkeeping from Chris Kirkland frustrated them.
SHEARER FRUSTRAITED
Danny Murphy gave Liverpool an early lead after a defensive mistake but after the break Laurent Robert was brought down by keeper Kirkland - a penalty was awared, and Shearer made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Shearer said: “I think we can count ourselves unlucky not to have taken all three points in the second half.
“We gave away a stupid goal but in the second half we knew we would get chances and but for good goalkeeping we would have won the game."
Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier was a much happier man after the game at St James’.
“It was a deserved point. There was a lot of dramatic intensity about the game and I thought we had a good response today. We showed guts and character,” he said.
“They dominated the game but we knew they would do that because we have practically half a team out with injuries.
“I am a happier man because I think the performance against Bolton was not satisfactory despite the fact we rotated some players.
“The response was full of pride and very positive today and yes that makes me extremely happy and very proud of them.”
