WOODY'S RETURN DATE

Jonathan Woodgate is ready to return to action for Newcastle against Manchester City on 22 November after recuperating from a double hernia operation.

St James' Park boss, Sir Bobby Robson, was delighted with Woodgates' progress after he came through nearly 80 minutes for the reserves on Monday night.

"On the evidence of his performance in the reserves, I would say he's well on the way to recovery," said Robson.

"He's absolutely fine and he will be fit for the visit of Man City." Woodgate has been out of action since September, but Robson now believes that the defender is ready to compete for a place with Titus Bramble and Andy O'Brien.

Robson added: "I'm sure he'll be fine, but it's a big step up to first-team football.

"The game against Middlesbrough's reserves was all about easing his way back in and we told him to steer clear of any 50-50 challenges and avoid anything too silly.

"I thought he got it just right and it's good to have him back."
