Ever the optimist, looking back over the last few games, our performance has improved and aside of yesterday's blip so have the results. Though we may not be taking 3 points a game just yet, 1 point per game is better than none. However this doesn't help our place in the Premier League table and we are still sitting comfortably at 19^th, four points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur who have just poached one of the very few decent English managers around. Harry Redknapp.

Redknapp was linked with Newcastle back in January when a deal looked certain and then failed to materialise. Then again when Keegan left the club, but his sense of ‘home' at Portsmouth was enough to discourage the bookies and his name soon fell out of the hat. Now his main aim is to lift Spurs from the bottom of the table high above Newcastle and out of the red depths of a relegation battle. For Newcastle this is an unfortunate turn of events.

Not because we needed Redknapp as manager but because he does get results and encourages a decent stability at the clubs he has been at; whereas at present we are getting half results, have no permanent manager and lack stability.

If Spurs start scoring (and not conceding) Newcastle need to do the same. Whether Spurs start winning or not, Newcastle need to. Redknapp takes control of his first game today, a home match against Bolton. A match which has been completely turned on its head by the sacking of Juande Ramos and Harry's appointment, a match which will have at least 11 players on the field looking to impress, therefore win.

Joe Kinnear hasn't had a bad start at the club in his role as interim manager (he had a massive job) and he has obviously begun to lift our player's confidence, but some players are still lacking. This is obvious when they are on the ball. This is resulting in unnecessary draws (or losses) which should have been sealed in a win.

Next we play West Brom followed by Villa both on home ground. We need 6 points. We need to ooze confidence.

The fight from the bottom three has just got interesting.
