Diatta Set For Anfield?

If recent reports are to be believed then Newcastle United FC have offered Senegal captain Lamine Diatta a deal at St James park, subject to a medical today. Keegan has had Diatta training with the club for the last 4 days and was set to make an announcement yesterday. Instead it was reported today that the 32 year old will sign a contract.

The deal should be sealed within the next 24 hours, as the defender is a free agent after buying his contract with Bestikas out in January after his stint in the African Cup of Nations.

Diatta has previously played for Marseille, Rennes, Lyon and St Etienne before joining Bestikas in 2007. He alo had a trial with Charlton in 2001 in an attempt to break into the Premier League.

As the deal looks set to be done it is almost certain that he will be in the squad travelling to Liverpool for Saturday's 3pm Kick Off at Anfield.

No details of the contract have been released by the club, but are expected on the basis of Lamine passing his medical.

Keegan said earlier in the week:

"We have Monday and Tuesday to see how he does and we can sign him if we want him.

But we will not be signing him unless it is a worthwhile exercise."

I feel this is VERY similar to the Kilchine (sp?) signing. Could be what we were hoping for in Cacapa.

I am just trying to figure out why we are signing this guy. Maybe for set pieces cause I believe he is a big guy but is he better than what we have? last I remember he isn't.

Just said on SSN that we've signed him on loan until the end of season but i've gotta ask how do you loan a player with no club?.

I thought that this guy had brought out the remainder of his contract with Besiktas and was a free agent.

HAHA good question. I would hope its maybe a trial til the end of the season type thing maybe? but who knows. I do not see him staying here for long unless he has a total 180 in his career
