Newcastle United fans have been stunned into a mixture of agony and relief over rumours their long wait for a trophy may have been put back, with no Intertoto cup set to be awarded prior to the SV Zulte-Waregrem match tonight.
Although the trophy is considered somewhat a booby prize, especially by fans of rival clubs, the fact Newcastle are the sole remaining side from the competition still in the UEFA Cup proper is no mean feat, especially considering the original draw facing Roeder's men.
After overcoming ties with Palermo, Fenerbahce, Celta Vigo and European giants FC Levadia, the Toon Army can now look forward to a tie against either the Dutch side AZ Alkmaar or a rematch with the Turkish giants Fenerbahce, if they can overcome their Belgian part-time opponents tonight.
