Mark Huknall sang ‘Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens’. Maybe he was confusing it with Prenton Park?
We are almost at midsummers night, the fixture list comes out on 25th June and we have Rochdale in the EFL cup, or whatever name the League Cup goes under now, on the first Saturday in August. Not much else. No new signings. Rumours but nothing concrete. Darrell Clarke gives an interview about how he likes attacking wing backs, but we are still yonks away from having a match-day squad. In the modern world there is the cry ‘it’s always been like this’. That’s applied to politicians, the weather and our transfer market activity. But it hasn’t, it’s the refuge of the complacent and the devious.
Apparently we are also to have new owners. The imminence of the deal has created a bubble where time stands still. This is massaged by speculation that once the takeover happens we will go on a Wrexham like spending spree, splashing out a few quid more to assemble a squad fit for promotion.
25th June though gives us something concrete. The fixture list. We can then start planning what we do over the coming months. There are games I am looking forward to. Away at Exeter, Rochdale and Rotherham. Hopefully home on Boxing Day and Good Friday and a home game to end the season on. I think this will be season 59 for me. It’s been quite a few seasons since we had much to get excited about. The past 4 or 5 seasons have been pretty awful. Surely it can’t carry on like this.
The club have maintained radio silence on season card (tickets, in old money) sales. I wonder if this is because a reduction will delay the imminent takeover deal? The Club count season ticket holders as having attended games regardless as to whether you turn up. It may well be the case that we will need an abacus to work out where we are at. Gates below 5000 would suggest a trailing off. And that matters, in a big way, because the day to day money available will reduce.
Yet hope springs eternal. Maybe some mad crazed football multi- billionaire will get inspiration from all this football action. Could it be that now he is the World’s richest person Elon Musk will step in, paying small change for our club? You never know, and remember, the rumour started here.
