GNProfile

Goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen joined Tranmere Rovers on July 21 2010 on a six-month loan spell from Premier League side Manchester City.

A strongly built player, Nielsen is a tall, broad goalkeeper who looks intimdating to on-coming strikers, the goalkeeper has a strong pair of hands and is capable of pulling off some fine saves, as you'd expect from a Premier League shot stopper.

A Faroe Islands international, Nielsen started his career in his homeland before earning a move to Blackburn Rovers in 2007 for an undisclosed fee.  The goalkeeper spent two years at Blackburn, which included a loan spell at Motherwell, but after failing to make an appearance for either club, he joined Manchester City, again for an undisclosed fee, in 2009.

Behind Shay Given in the pecking order at City, Nielsen was always going to find it hard to break into the first team at the City of Manchester Stadium, but he did make his debut for the Citizens at the Emirates Stadium in April 2010, keeping a clean sheet as he replaced the injured Shay Given.

During the 09/10 season, Nielsen, who has three full international caps for his country to his name, as well as ten U21 caps (at the time of writing), spent time on loan at Wrexham on loan where he made five appearances before sustaining a thumb injury.
