Tranmere Rovers reserves today claimed their second successive Pontins Holidays Reserves League thanks to a close 3-2 win against local rivals Wrexham Reserves. Trinidad and Tobago trialist Cornell Glen got two of the Rovers goals, whilst Chris Greenacre scored just after half-time.

Tranmere Rovers reserves today picked up three points in the Pontins Holidays reserve league thanks to a 3-2 win over Wrexham's Reserves.

Brian Little returned to Prenton Park to watch his second string play, with former Rovers player Sam Aiston captaining the Wrexham side.

Shaun Garnett's Tranmere team had a mix of youth and experience in it, with reserve team regulars Ashton Taylor, Aaron Cresswell, Luke Denson and Tom Beahon joined by first team players John Mullin, Adnan Ahmed, Chris Greenacre and Mike Jones.

Rovers also had Trinidad and Tobago international Cornell Glen in the side. The former LA Galaxy and Columbus player is currently on trial at Prenton Park, and the striker started up front along side Chris Greenacre.

Wrexham had most of the early possession, but despite this Tranmere took the lead on 14-minutes with Glen scoring his first goal in the Tranmere shirt.

The striker recieved the ball with his back to goal midway inside the Wrexham half. After a neat turn, Glen ran at and beat his man thanks to good pace and a few step-overs, which got him to the edge of the area. Holding off one defender, Glen shot and a slight deflection took the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.

Rovers could have doubled their advantage half way through the half as Cresswell had a shot saved from a free-kick.  The set-piece was taken from just inside the Wrexham half and as Cresswell spotted the Wrexham 'keeper, Williams, off his line, he shot and the ball was going in until the back-peddling Williams caught the ball inside his six-yard box.

There was then very little action until Wrexham equalised though Duffy on 33-minutes.  The ball fell to the on-loan Oxford striker just outside the six yard box after poor marking from Rovers, and the striker smashed the ball into the roof of the net, leaving Tranmere 'keeper Peter Kennedy with no chance.

Tranmere could however have regained the lead before half-time, as first Denson's cross was headed down to Mullin by Glen, but the midfielder could only shoot straight at the 'keeper from close-range, whilst another long, mazy run by Glen came to nothing as Williams came out to claim the ball.

The second half was lively, and Tranmere took the lead within the opening ten minutes through striker Chris Greenacre.

Tom Beahon's initial powerful effort from the edge of the area was saved by Williams, but Greenacre pounced on the re-bound, hitting the ball into the back of the empty net from a tight angle with his first touch.

Greenacre was then subsituted just after the hour mark, replaced by promising youngster Terry Gornell who went straight upfront with Glen.

Wrexham were looking to get back in the game and their first chance fell to Duffy who badly miss-hit a volley from just inside the area well wide of the goal whilst another effort was hit straight at Kennedy.

A free-kick then curled just wide of the goal before Tranmere got their third of the afternoon with 83-minutes on the clock.

Cornell Glen was again the scorer, as he brilliantly chested down a long clearance by Kennedy before volleying the ball goalwards with his next touch, lobbing his shot over Williams and into the bottom corner of the net.

The striker certainly did his chances of getting a contact at the club no harm as he worked increadibly hard, looking hungry to pick up every ball and score goals through-out the afternoon. He dsplayed good pace, strength and quick feet as well as a deadly touch infront of goal.

Wrexham did get back in the game on 89 minutes as Duffy got his second of the game, with the un-marked striker heading a cross back across goal and into the corner of the goal, but Tranmere were able to hold on and claim the win, their second in a row in the League.

Glen sounds like he might be a decent signing. Hopefully he may stay long enough to play next week as well?

Does this mean there may actually be some truth in the rumours that Zola might be on his way? I was thinking earlier, if we'd had a couple of extra players this season we could be further up the league than we are, Glen looks a good player, I remember him from the world cup, although I don't think he started a game but did come on as a sub if I remember correctly. A bit of pace up front in this league is always good to have and would be essential if we were to move up a league, you never know. I think besides the obvious financial backing that we don't have, the main difference between the likes of us and Swansea, Forest, Leeds etc is the squad size, if we could have afforded to have a bigger squad this season, the injuries might not have hit so hard. On the other hand we have a small squad but it is quite a good quality squad which I would rather have out of the two options.

He was leagues ahead of anybody else out there yesterday so I can't see why not. Should be offered a deal until the end of the season

Have to agree Matt, he did have a fine game and should have scored a third when he left Pejic for dead. Made Greenacre look ordinary. I was also impressed with his work rate and willingness to defend for the team. If we dont sign him someone else will.

Greenacre is going to have to improve his game with Zola,Moore & Glen(subject to getting a contract) are scoring goals & impressing

Why choose Greenacre in particular there out of interest?

The same point applies to all the Strikers surely?

I don't think we sign Glen anyway to be honest!
