Yet again we saw this week the meeting of Bristol Rovers and Bristol City in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.  Although Rovers had the home advantage City went into the match as favourites and were trying not to spring any surprises.

However it was Rovers who prevailed through a sixty-fifth minute rocket from Rickie Lambert. This now sets up Rovers for a tie to face League One opposition once again in the shape of Doncaster Rovers but this time on neutral ground in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

Earlier in the week in League One there was a full fixture list to entertain the crowds at the weekend.  Gillingham were this weekends choice to brave the unforgivable form of Scunthorpe United and as expected, Scunthorpe ran out the winners.  At 1-1, Gillingham didn’t help their case by having a man sent off.  Then it was over to the League leaders to take a lead and then extend it.

Perhaps the biggest tie of the weekend was between Swansea and Yeovil.  The Swans were campaigning to put pressure in the top six where as Yeovil were pushing for automatic promotion at the top off the League sitting in second place.  It was down to veteran striker Marcus Stewart to win the game with a solo goal ten minutes in to the second half.

This result was not good for Swansea, but benefited the top six. During the mid-week there were only a hand full of teams playing as the amount of games played started to equal out as the cup runs had come to an end. These fixtures saw Oldham and Blackpool play out against each other both of them trying to secure a playoff place.

The game ended 1-0 with Blackpool coming out on top and joining the queue to acquire one of the top six places.

Doncaster, who also have a decent shout at a play off place faced Yeovil but the game was rather disappointing, ending as a bore draw which did not alter the make-up of the table, but did close up the top six teams.

Rotherham fell fowl to Swansea City losing 2-1.  Unbeknown to us this would be Knill’s last game at the helm of the Millers as the Rotherham board subsequently dismissed him.  This now means that Rotherham can add their search for a new manager to the ever growing list of problems at the club.  Also on Tuesday Scunthorpe further secured their place at the top with their on form marksman Billy Sharp bagging a brace.

This weekend sees Bradford play Rotherham in a bottom of the table clash.  Brighton travel to Crewe who are just one place higher than they are and a win would allow Brighton to join the promotion chase.  Huddersfield will be confident that they can spring a surprise at Nottingham Forest as they look to finish as high up the table as they can.  Nottingham Forrest will be trying to secure a good run of form as they gear up for what is fierce battle for second automatic place.
