Northampton fixture rained off

Thank God it's local. Dons' clash against Northampton Town has been called off due to a waterlogged pitch after torrential wind and rain throughout the first half.

The match really did descend into a farce, with the only chance of any goal being a set-piece or a mistake. Jemal Johnson's corners caused the home side a few problems while one dangerous free-kick saw Cobblers striker Leon Constantine almost stretching close enough to get a stab at the ball from inside the area. That really was the sum of it.

The ball became impossible to pass as it stuck to the surface, and as it deteriorated became downright dangerous with players slipping left, right and centre and the risk of studs getting caught in the ground when running. Long ball wasn't an option due to the very strong winds and also because of the way the ball was literally sinking into the muddy surface.

Dons made two changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Leicester. Miguel Llera hadn't shaken off a foot injury in time for the game and so Jude Stirling came in at centre-back, while in a surprise selection Shaun Cummings was reinstated at right-back despite the superb form of Carl Regan, a move which really begged the question, what does Regan have to do to hold a place in the side?

Dons' play basically consisted of hoofing it over the top to Aaron Wilbraham, who, to his credit, never stopped running when others wouldn't have bothered. The same goes for Luke Chadwick, Jason Puncheon and in particular, Johnson, for whom it was impossible to produce anything like their usual quality.

A date for the rearranged fixture is yet to be set, as are details of whether tickets for the original game will be valid for the replay, a decision that will be made by Northampton Town in most likely the next couple of days.
