Pride of Lanarkshire takes an in depth look at Fir Park.
History of the ground

Old Fir Park

It wasn't until nine years after Motherwell were formed that they moved into Fir Park in 1895. When it opened ,it had a 15,000 capacity with standing room only. It has held one International match Between Scotland and Wales which Scotland won 5 - 2.

The record attendance is a staggering 35,632,which was set in a Scottish Cup game against Rangers on Motherwell's successful 1952 campaign.

Over the years it rarely changed until 1967 when the money recieved for the Ian St John transfer to Liverpool built the Main Stand which is still standing today, it cost £60,000 to build. The Stand runs only 3/4 length of the pitch as neighbours nearby wouldn't let Motherwell build the whole stand as it would block the sun in their back garden.

The Taylor Report required Motherwell and all top flight top clubs in Britain to have a all-seater Stadium ,the redevolpment of the stadium started in 1991, seats were installed in the East enclosure replacing the terracing. The South Stand was built in 1993 at a cost of 2.4 Million ,it holds 4800 which is allocated to the away fans. The Davie Cooper Stand, which houses the home fan's was built two years later at a cost of 1.5 Million and holds 2400. Fir Park now holds a total of 13,742,which is plenty as home crowds average around 5000 until the Old Firm come to town, then it's usually a full house.

What's it like for away fans ?
