Out of all the Lanarkshire club's, Airdrie have always been Motherwell's closest challengers to ' The Pride Of Lanarkshire ' title. Apart from Motherwell, they are the only other Lanarkshire Club to lift a major throphy winning the Scottish Cup in 1924. Airdrie are also the only other Lanarkshire club to compete in Europe after reaching the Scottish Cup Final and took the Cup Winners Cup place. Sparta Prague were the Diamonds opponents and the tiny Lanarkshire side did themselves proud by only losing 3 - 1 on aggregate, Kenny Black got the goal in the 2 - 1 defeat in Prague.
Motherwell have the upper hand over Airdrie in matches although Airdrie won our last two League Cup meetings in 1994 and 2001, Airdrie won both matches 2 - 1.
In 2002 Airdrieonians became bankrupt and lost their Scottish League membership. Within weeks a new team - Airdrie United - had been formed and took the place of Clydebank in the Second Division.

Post war meetings between Motherwell and Hamilton have been scarce, a mere thirteen at Douglas Park. Their rarity has made the Accies fans approach these occasions with additional relish. Accies can proudly say that they have more than held their own, winning six, drawing two and losing five of the post-war contests. And for a time in the 1980s it looked like the old days again as both Accies and 'Well frequently found themselves playing at the same level once again. A situation the Accies supporters of today long to see repeated. However their record at Fir Park is not as good as the form at Douglas Park, winning only eight league matches to Motherwell's thirty.
Our last meeting came like all Lanarkshire derbies these days, in the Scottish Cup, after a draw at Fir Park in 1997 we went on to beat the Accies 2 - 0 in the replay at Broadwood which was Accies temporary home at the time. The Accies finest hour came in 1987 when they defeated Graeme Souness's all star
