Forest Realistically End Rover's Play-Off Hopes

Back in the Squad
By MikeyB
April 12 2008
A 2-0 defeat against rivals Nottingham Forest at Prenton Park was enough to practically destroy any remaining hopes Tranmere had of making the play-offs. Nathan Tyson and Wes Morgan both scored either side of half time. Despite being the better team, Tranmere were unable to put the ball into Forest's net.

Imo I though are PLayoff chance was over After the Bournmouth away game!

Simply, a dissapointing second half display made us loose today!

The first 25 mins, we abserloutly Thrashed Forest! And was ul not to score with greenacre's Dissalowed goal!

But when They scored ( Another defensive error) Imo there was know coming back, as were not very good from behind!

Even though Forest Rarely tested Coyne, I always thought they were the team to always be in control, especially on the counter!

Coyne-6
Stockdale-7
goodison-6
Kay-6
Taylor-8
Shuker-6
Mclaren-5.5
Jeno-6
Sheriff-6.5
Moore-6.5
Green-6

Curran-7 ( thought he came on and did well, give him a chance next week)
Davies-6.5 ( Shown good signs of what he is capable of)

I thought we had good spells in the game (the possession Stats prove that point) but we never looked creative enough apart from the disallowed goal for offside and a couple of other chances.

With McLaren and Jennings out I would like to see Ahmed and Kay come into midfield next Saturday with Chorley or Sherriff going to the back (probably Chorley).

First half hour was really encouraging i just fort we lacked convinction in the final third. Second half was a bit of a let down but Forest seemed to get a bit of confidence from the 1st goal and they seemed to get more into the game due to numerous mistakes.

I fort Wes Morgan was an absolute rock for them and was one of the best player's on the pitch today. Defencely you could tell they we're going to be hard to break down and if we did get any chance it needed to be put away but the killer touch wasn't there.

Thought Stockdale was v.good today and deserves all the plaudits he gets as he's one of the most consistent performers in the team. Good to see Curran and Davies giving their effort even in a situation where the game was beyond us.

Once again the officiating at this level simply isn't good enough and it is a serious issue that needs to be addressed and thats decisions regarding both sides.

Saw Olivier Bernard with Calvin today, just in the queue for tickets Calvin came along in his megane just before the game started.
Surprised he hasn't had a club for almost a year, would be a good player at this level I think but being a friend of Calvin if we we're interested in him something would have materialised earlier in the season.

At the end of the day I think even if we did make the play-offs looking at the teams in there with Southend in a rich vein of form, Forest who seem solid at the back and at home, Doncaster who are a good footballing side, our chances of success in the play-offs would be slim but I think the sooner Ronnie's contract is tied up the better and we can look forward to next season with some fresh faces coming in.

Yeah Bernard would be a good signing but we have Andy Taylor so..

What was he doing their anyway?

Oh and my ratings:

Coyne-7
Stockdale-7
Kay-5
Goodison-5
A.Taylor-7
Sherriff-5
Shuker-5 Seems to lack thhat atacckign approach he use to have, he seems to pass it more often, doesn't look as exciting on the ball since his injury.
Greenacre-6
Moore-7 (motm)
Davo-6 (brilliant to see him back)
Curran-6

Olivier is Calvin's top friend on Facebook!

I don't think theres any way Shuker could be given a 5 - I agree that he didn't run at players but perhaps that might be a confidence thing with his injury?

He was involved in some great build up play, especially one in first half with McLaren on left wing were McLaren hit a shot just wide of the post.

I thought Shuker was excellent today!

He lost the ball lots though and his crossing in first 10 mintues were awfull, and his first touch weren't great.

Shuker was great until just before he went off at which point he looked tired as you might expect having not played too much recently.

I thought Andy Taylor was our best player

Yep agreed, Taylor was very good today as usual!

People critizise Sheriff for not being attacking, but tbh hes not a left winger, he came in as a centre half, and considering that, i think hes done very well for him self at left mid over these months! And hasnt embarrsed himself at all!

Sherriff can't cross, can't tackle and has shite positional sense. That's bad attributes for any player, let alone a defender.

Sherriff did well today I though.

I think Jenno gave the ball away more than Shuker today aswell.

I also think Sherriff did well and while Matt has a very valid point about positional sense (Bournemouth especially), he has had to adapt to a new position as Nathan says.

I suppose as a professional footballer you should be able to adapt but it doesn't always work that way.

He started his career as a @#$%& left-midfielder. Brilley is a better left-winger than him and he tracks back better

Hard luck lads, even the commentators on Forest World said that Forest were poor today, even if we were solid at the back. No doubt we will be playing you again next season though because Forest always seem to bottle the play-offs.

I think matty, your abit harsh on him lol

he has scored a fair few goals, and does well to get some good balls into box!

HE may of started of as a left mid but for the past several years he hasnt been one!

I think hes done well enough to earn himself a new deal even if its only for a year!

Cheers mate, we really do need to go up this year. I remember Tranmere beating us in the League Cup the year you reached the final. Have you not beaten us since then?

That brings me to the question I was thinking about today....

Would you rather get rid of Leeds or Forest from this Division if you could only choose one?

Forest. At least Leeds is only a 90 minute drive as well.

I was saying to Mikey this afternoon that I would also go for Forest - I hate going there for several reasons.

Regardless of what level you are at, you need to practice to become accomplished at something and to maintain a high level of competence. Shane has been played everywhere so I am not surprised that sometimes his positional sense is all over the place. Came in as a CB, then played LB, then a few games at RB, and this season at LM, RM, LB, CB and CM. I feel sprry for the lad. However, it is his job to do what is asked of him which he is tying his hardest to do.
