Hull have announced the signing of former Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink despite the passing of the transfer deadline at 5pm on Tuesday. As Vennegoor of Hesselink was a free agent is was therefore exempt from the deadline. The Dutch striker has signed a 2 year deal with the club. The Dutch international has been handed squad number 29.

Vennegoor of Hesselink was linked with Championship team Bristol City but manager Gary Johnson said that his wage would have had to drop by a third.

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink says the offer to join Hull City stood out above any other club and he can't wait to get started in a black and amber shirt.

The 30-year-old signed for the Tigers having been without a club after rejecting the offer of a new contract from Celtic at the end of last season.

Speaking exclusively to the Hull City web site, Vennegoor of Hesselink said: "I was available on a free transfer after leaving Celtic and had some options. I looked at other clubs and held talks with them, but I didn't get the right feeling from them. When I came to Hull City, I got the right feeling straight away. I am glad that everything has worked out okay and I am now looking forward to the challenge of playing in the biggest league in the world".

Hesselink had spent the summer training with his former club FC Twente in Holland while looking for a club.
