Cattermole is Black Cats Captain

Lee Cattermole has been named, by Steve Bruce, as Sunderland Captain for this season which kicks off tomorrow.

The captain's armband was left anclaimed after Lorik Cana departed for Galatasaray earlier in the summer.
 
Cattermole will be captain on the pitch while fellow midfielder Bolo Zenden will assume the role of club captain, dealing with off-field matters.

Cattermole, the ex Middlesbrough man, played under Steve Bruce at Wigan prior to making a £6m move to Wearside last summer.
 
Cattermole was Middlesbrough's youngest ever captain when he skippered the side aged just 18.

Here's what Bruce had to say: "Lee epitomises everything a manager looks for in a team captain.

"He always shows passion, pride and commitment to the cause, and never gives up. Lee shows the kind of 100% effort which Sunderland fans expect and are entitled to."

Meanwhile Zenden will lead the team off the field, helping his team-mates and the club's youngsters.
 
He is one of the game's most experienced players, boasting more than 400 senior appearances for clubs around the wolrd including Barcelona, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Bruce on Zenden: "Bolo has been a huge influence in the dressing room since he arrived, often acting as a link between the management and the players.

"Bolo is a fantastic mentor for our younger players. Bolo is a model professional and a shining example to everyone with his attitude towards playing, conditioning and behaviour on and off the field."
